SPATIAL VARIATION OF WEAR ON CHARITE DISC AND IMPROVED WEAR PERFORMANCE OF UHMWPE THROUGH COLD GAS PLASMA TECHNIQUE

Abstract: The changes on the surface of Charite disc during a 5 million cycle (MC) wear simulation were investigated on different locations on the superior and inferior side (dome, side and rim). No difference was found between superior and inferior side and no effect on the rim. Significant difference was recorded between the dome and the side. The surface roughness on the dome initially decreases but after 3MC it increases remarkably, on the contrary, on the side of the disc the surface roughness decreases initially and remains constant after 2MC.
Cold atmospheric gas plasma has been used to improve the wear performance of UHMWPE, currently used for arthroplasty, the effect is due to an increase of cross-linking between polyethylene chains. Nanoindentation revealed that the material hardness, after treatment, is higher than the untreated samples in the outer lawyer (thickness about 1.5 microns) of the material. No cytotoxic effect of the cold gas plasma treated material was noticed on osteoblast.
